Among BARF fruits for dogs, bananas certainly have a place. This fruit of the banana plant is very tasty and full of energy. However, the leathery peel, which makes up about 20% of the fruit, should not be given to your dog. Besides not being very tasty, it contains a lot of fiber, which could cause digestive problems for your dog.
What is the significance of bananas in a BARF diet?
Bananas for dogs are an important source of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, and fiber. In 100g of banana, there are on average 23g of carbohydrates, 0.3g of protein, and even some fat.
Source of Vitamins
Bananas contain fat-soluble vitamins like A, K, and E. Among water-soluble vitamins, bananas have primarily vitamin C, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, and folic acid.
Minerals
Bananas are an excellent source of potassium (K), with 358 mg in 100g of banana. In addition to potassium, bananas also contain selenium, iodine, zinc, cobalt, molybdenum, magnesium, iron, sodium, phosphorus, manganese, copper, fluoride, calcium, and chromium.
Due to their high carbohydrate and energy content, bananas are particularly suitable for active dogs. However, they should not be given in large amounts or too often. In large quantities, bananas can cause constipation in dogs. They are also not recommended for dogs prone to overweight or obesity. But giving your dog a slice of banana once a week certainly won’t harm them. The amount of banana depends on the breed and size of the dog. While giant breeds can handle up to two bananas, a few slices are enough for smaller breeds.
Bananas as a Useful Aid for Diarrhea
Due to diarrhea, a significant amount of electrolytes is lost from the body, so giving your dog a banana is a good idea. Bananas are rich in potassium, so this is a great way to replenish it. They also contain fiber, which is necessary for proper bowel movement. If diarrhea lasts longer than 3 days, you should visit a vet to determine the cause. If your dog is lethargic or dehydrated, don't wait for their condition to improve—seek veterinary care as soon as possible.
Bananas can also be given to dogs with kidney disease or pancreatitis (pancreatic inflammation). In the BARF diet for a healthy dog, bananas can be offered several times a week. Remember, bananas should not be stored in the refrigerator.
